Old Schoolhouse Carroch

A low energy extension and alterations to sculptor and artist’s studio and house at Carroch in Glenprosan, Kirrimuir.

The Client has already extensively restored the existing Victorian sandstone schoolhouse; however, the residential footprint is severely restricted and now requires to be extended to the rear in order to improve the internal layout and at the front of the property to replace a dilapidated conservatory.

Wherever possible every opportunity is being taken to retrofit and upgrade the existing traditionally constructed building to achieve greater energy efficiency, without compromising the character of the original building. A holistic understanding of the building upgrade and occupant behaviour is at the heart of this approach and practical solutions include thermal enhancement of the solid walls, roof and glazing elements, sustainably sourced solid fuel heating and solar and PV installations to provide power and lighting off-grid.
