Shieldaig Farm Steading, Badachro

Conversion of a historic farm steading on the Badachro peninsula in Wester Ross. The proposal will create a 3-bedroom house with adjoining flexible accommodation for artist studios and sound recording. Part new build and part conversion of the existing steading the new buildings retain the original three sided courtyard, providing shelter from the prevailing weather and opening up elevations with views to Shieldaig Bay.

The buildings adopt a palette of materials to complement it’s existing surroundings including natural ‘torridonian’ stone, render, stained Scot-larch and a sinusoidal profiled, mill finish, aluminium roof.

The ‘low energy’ construction aims to achieve as close to ‘passivhaus’ standards as possible and will adopt high levels of wall, floor and roof insulation, triple glazing and an MVHR system will be installed to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Hot water and underfloor heating will be fed from an air source heat pump and power provided from an on-site wind turbine will also feed back into the grid.
